  Overview

Whether you've stayed up late at night watching ''It's Showtime at the Apollo'' or just heard about this theater in Harlem, you know that this is an important venue for African American talent.

Halem's Apollo Theater is located at 253 West 125th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues and has been showcasing singers and comedians since its inception in 1934, when it was purchased by Sid Cohen. Before that time, it was a burlesque hall featuring risque acts for a whites-only audience. Now the only wild acts are on amateur night, but the theater has always captured the attention of audiences.

Whether it's amateur talent or professional performers like Billie Holliday and Aretha Franklin, they've all graced the stage at the Apollo. Visit this national landmark and learn about the past talent that performed here from the collage on the Wall of Fame in the lobby. See the Tree of Hope everyone touches for good luck before performing and more on a guided tour, or take in Wednesday night's amateur performances.

There is also a gift shop with clothing, souvenirs, jewelry and past recordings all pertaining to the theater. History was made on the Apollo Theater's stage - don't miss the chance to visit.

For more information on arranging a tour ($8.00 per person) call 212-222-0992. For a schedule of upcoming performers call 212-749-5838.
