Overview
It?s just like culturally sensitive Cambridge to come up with this progressive media experiment: an exhibition and performance center that weds the arts with social awareness to promote cross-cultural and -racial interchange.
Housed in the beautifully renovated Bullfinch Square complex in East Cambridge, The Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center (CMAC) showcases a culturally diverse mix of traditional and contemporary art forms. This community forum?s mission is to present arts and humanities programs that 'bridge the gaps of difference and ignorance that fuel racism and other forms of bigotry.' The facility provides a venue for artists who are often cut off from the cultural mainstream.
CMAC puts on over eighty events a year, including exhibitions, dance, theater, music, and community dialogues. A list of recent programs hints at the rich dish of offerings: Grandmothers: Granddaughters Remember, a celebration of Women?s history month; a concert by Verde, an acclaimed Latin American popular music ensemble; and Sounds from the Bear and the Dragon: Music from Chinese and Russian Traditions. An ongoing series, Arts and Dialogues on Race, will continue this fall. CMAC?s popular annual Day of the Dead celebration, to be held this year on November 1, from 6:30 pm-9:30 pm, brings together a broad cross-section of peoples to participate in one of Mexico?s most hallowed and colorful rituals.
The Center?s performance calendar runs from September to May, while Gallery exhibitions change periodically year round.
